It wouldn't work for some groups, and some GMs couldn't make it work. Mind-control powers can take away player agency to a degree your players have to be able to roll with. It's hard to make a game you really want to play or run that works for everybody.

With TTRPGs, balance is sometimes in the hands of the GM. I'm working on a system for some super-not-exactly-hero shit which I want to run in the vein of Misfits where I don't care if you're virtually indestructible physically. Someone with mind-control powers can still fuck your entire life up.

Yeah, I'm only talking about mechanics which I know you can't copyright, but I know not everyone has as permissive a license as D&D, so my concern is less about being unable to prevail but with receiving bogus lethal threats I couldn't afford to lawyer up for. Some companies are litigious bullies.

I'm curious as to when you're writing mechanics how much you crib from existing games while changing it up enough to make it fresh and how litigious existing companies are. Like I know you can do d20 shit without too much hassle, but could you use a d10 system like White Wolf without getting sued?
