His shizun was a monster.

Somehow, Luo Binghe had forgotten that. Him, the demon spawn reared by human cruelty, had forgotten how dangerous someone was. How powerless Binghe was, compared them.

Shen Yuan lacked nothing. His innate strength, his steel-trap mind? The sky-scraping accumulation of knowledge backed by no doubt centuries, if not millennia, of experience? He was danger embodied, and Binghe should have never forgotten.

Didn’t he know? The callous ways of those with power? Was that not the one serviceable lesson Shen Qingqiu had bestowed on him? He did, didn’t he? And yet—

His shizun had made it so easy.

Even looking like he did, insectile and preternatural and immense, Shen Yuan had made it easy.

The Abyssal Lord had been unerringly gentle with Binghe, the bellicose Heavenly Demon cub that greeted him with violence. His shizun could have killed him for his greeting, and not even the most ascetic of monks could have cast judgment on that.

Shen Yuan took him in instead.

Generous with his praise, ungrudging with his reproach, his shizun had ushered him through innumerable trials and drip-fed him the most arcane of secrets. So indulgent Shen Yuan was with his only disciple that Binghe had dared to be presumptuous, to be brazen and unafraid.

And now, greeted with the sight of Shen Yuan mincing and devouring a grisly beast, the hateful, mistrustful half-blood couldn’t find it in himself to hide.

As Meng Mo spectated and delved into cautionary tales, Binghe delved into a strange place of fear and want. Frozen in place, he watched as Shen Yuan fed and left nothing of his meal, his prey, and wondered about his own willful blindness. The mouth that mimicked a human torso—no, the monster that mimicked a human, in all their glory.

Binghe saw, and remained seated.

When his shizun—calamity in flesh, hollow, starving, all-consuming—reached for him, Luo Binghe leaned forward. Like an accused before the court, he faced his fate.

To be met with gentleness.

2nd: Luo Binghe, full-body. He's kneeling, looking up at the back of his shizun. Shen Yuan is standing before him, expressionless, the many ends of his blindfold swaying restlessly around him. Binghe calls out, "No, shizun! I can still—" Shen Yuan cuts him off, "I said!"

3rd: Shen Yuan, from his back. His hands are spread, his blindfold ends following the motion. There's an abyssal beast walking towards them. It's shaped like a reptile standing on its hind legs, with a human-like face and teeth. Shen Yuan asks again, "Stand down!"

4th & 5th: Luo Binghe, still trying to get up and argue against Shen Yuan's command. The dream demon stops him, "Listen to him, brat."

6th: Shen Yuan, from front. His hands are still spread. His blindfold ends are spread out even more; some of them are poised to look like a crown of horns. His fan-like wings are rising as well. Shen Yuan looks dangerous. The dream demon, "He's no Heavenly Demon. But he is of the abyss."

7th: Luo Binghe, frozen still, clutching the blindfold that stopped him and decided to keep him company. He looks shocked as Shen Yuan fights the beast. The dream demon, "A Lord of this realm is—"

8th: Shen Yuan and the beast, mid-fight. Its mouth is wide open, revealing its many teeth, and its poison-tipped tail is poised to attack. But it can't move; it's been bloodied and completely enveloped in Shen Yuan's blindfolds. Shen Yuan on his part looks completely unphased, his hand raised to point at the beast, almost mocking. The dream demon, “A calamity in flesh.”

The second page. Shen Yuan devours his prey as Luo Binghe watches.

1st panel: Shen Yuan standing still as the stitches on his torso open to reveal a mouth. His entire torso is hollow but for the many fangs lining it. The dream demon, "Hollow."

2nd & 3rd & 4th: Shen Yuan devouring the beast he has slain. His blindfold ends are restless still, now in hunger instead of battle-lust. The dream demon: "Starving. All-consuming."

5th: The mouth/torso closing. It's covered in blood. Shen Yuan looking back at Luo Binghe, who hasn't moved an inch from his kneeling position. He's still clutching the blindfold end that hasn't left his side during the whole ordeal. Shen Yuan calling out, "Little Lord? Are you okay?"

6th: Shen Yuan, covered in blood, immense, leaning down to fuss over Luo Binghe. His hands are on his head, stroking his hair and face. His blindfold ends are no longer spread out. They're curling around Binghe instead. Shen Yuan is still asking after Binghe, wondering if the poison of the creature, one of the few that could affect heavenly demons, got to his student. Luo Binghe on his part looks struck-dumb, almost in awe. He's thinking, "Gentle. He's a gentle calamity."
