#NationalForestWeek "Could we think of smoke from the forests in the same way that we thought about coal smoke? How are the harms associated with wildfire smoke entangled with colonialism?" - Mica Jorgenson niche-canada.org/2023/03/01/w... #envhist #firehistory #foresthistory
Now the smoke is rolling back into our lives, we need to develop a more sophisticated smoke palate.

Having read that environmental history of China really made me believe in cycles of history because Chinese hydrologists were going back and forth on whether to confine the river to its channel or lessening its power with this kind of stuff for at least 2,000 years. What is old is new again.
👏 “A lot of nature conservation is a long game. You plant a tree, you're not going to in your lifetime see that it reached its full potential. But within three months of that river being re-wiggled the salmon were spawning in that one kilometre stretch for the first time in over 150 years”
For centuries meandering rivers have been straightened – but experts say restoring their natural bends and curves can prevent flooding and create healthy habitats for wildlife.
