After being arrested 10 days earlier while carrying secret resistance documents and brutally tortured, on 29 September 1944 Italian partisan Virginia Tonelli is burnt alive in the crematorium at the Risiera di San Sabba concentration camp in Trieste.

How horrific

The appalling Odilo Globočnik, an Austrian from Trieste, was in charge there, having previously organised the liquidation the Warsaw and Bialystok ghettos, and the building of Bełżec, Sobibór and Treblinka. Globočnik was responsible for the deaths of at least 1,500,000 people.
