Appreciate I'm on a lonely limb here, but I'd reverse your implication above. Perception of orientation is not a necessary prerequisite for balancing activity, but vice versa. Perception of orientation *emerges from* balancing activity as a sub-task, cos it's useful for regulating mechanical force
