"There are more than 10 million private swimming pools in the United States, according to a C.D.C. estimate, compared with just 309,000 public ones."

An example of a normative question that's been disguised as a theoretical or empirical one. Plenty of cold hard data now that it works, but it's not supposed to. "Dignity of work" and all that. So more tests to convince putative empiricists who have simply inherited cultural norms on moral desert.

I'm always trying to tell my friends to ditch Wirecutter and just subscribe to Consumer Reports. they have a product category issue of skewing older/homeowner like their audience but you can fundamentally trust their reviews and tests.

Pretty much the last reliable place to purchase quality items is outdoors stores, in large part bc 1) a lot of them are co-ops 2) brand loyalty and reputation 3) they need their products not to fucking kill you on a mountain. I try to get everything I can from REI now just bc i know it’s real
