Felling (sub-Areas 20, 23, 24, 25, 32 & 32) in the eastern part of the current Gateshead Metropolitan Borough formed its own UD until 1974. Until 1955, Felling UD was part of Jarrow constituency, before becoming part of Gateshead East.

Ellen Wilkinson was Labour MP for Jarrow from 1935-47, previously having been MP for Middlesbrough East from 1924-31. She played a prominent role in the Jarrow March in 1936. She became Minister of Education in 1945 in Attlee's government, before dying in 1947, aged 55.

Between 1983 and 1997 there was a Gateshead East constituency, but no other constituency with Gateshead in its name. (The western part of Gateshead was included in Tyne Bridge.)

Washington became a new town in 1964 (sub-Areas 8 & 9) and until 1983 it was within Chester-le-Street constituency. Since 1983 it has been included in constituencies with Washington in their name - but between 1997-2010 it was split between two different ones.
