how would you even provide a UI/UX for responding or interacting with a user with no handle? that's effectively what's happening here, and i don't think there should be any grace period if your handle is misconfigured

they had to have some way to show that someone's handle was configured incorrectly after the fact, or else someone could obtain a handle and impersonate indefinitely until manual intervention
