I always like when the character sprite changes. Maybe a temporary outfit of some sort would be a fun reward?

Sounds good for it to be short then! I'd play through the likes of StarFox and Turtles in Time over and over, for that pumped up ride! Call me a grouch, but I have literally never played through any of the classic RPGs more than once, even if they have alternate endings.

If you take the optional hard route in many Mario levels, you're often treated to a type of run/jump/wait pacing and a graphical assets constellation not found elsewhere. But not necessarily any extra lives or actual rewards. ❤️

Crucial for reward design in those Mario games is that the reward is almost always "more game". Not lots of coins or lives, or bragging rights. But a level otherwise unaccessible, a mini-challenge, or a shortcut that lets you access parts of the world earlier than your normally would. ✨

The VHS feel makes this intimately tantalizing. :3~
