I honestly like the idea that a phone number still is required. I imagine it being a filter against malicious accounts (who knows how good of course). Threema has the (relatively high) procurement cost as different filter.
The thing is... that will never be something that drives people towards or away from a messenger. In comparison, Threema 1. costs money 2. looks and feels older/worse 3. has less features Threema has always been lacking behind unfortunately. Signal truly seems the winner by now.
