DS9 holds up particularly well, I think. Strong writing, strong cast, and the setting allowing for a large rota of superb recurring actors. Also it's a lot lighter on the techno-babble, with even on-going jokes about it from the non Star Fleet characters.

I dropped my waffle.

The cover of Born in the U.S.A. the seventh studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on June 4, 1984. Bruce is standing in front of a red and white striped wall. Horizontal stripes, known to be slimming, give Bruce the confidence to pose for a close up of his Aristotle in snug blue jeans. He wears a white t-shirt - we canā€™t see the collar but we know itā€™s blue. The bulge in his left rear pocket is a mystery - perhaps some cigarettes to keep his trademark voice rough as a bag of spanners. Thereā€™s a red baseball cap poking out of his back right pocket - code that Bruce will submit to dynamic pricing for his concert tickets - a desire heā€™ll have to wait years to be fulfilled. Bruce is desperate for a gazebo thatā€™s bigger than Jon Bon Joviā€™s; one that will fit a jacuzzi and a snooker table. That will be glory days.

You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere.

The cover of Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Rod Stewart's 1979 best-of compilation. Rod is wearing a hot pink shiny jacket, no shirt, no wedding ring. Satin or silk? Probably silk - heā€™s done ok for himself. His glorious blonde hair is lightly shagged and we doubt the cuffs match. Rodā€™s caught the sun - clearly he hasnā€™t been on holiday with Australians - no constant bollockings to use sunblock for him. A smile says Rod just bashed out another top 10 hit about birds in time for the start of the football, honey. His legs are out of frame but we know theyā€™re covered in more leopard print than a soap opera landlady. Heā€™s still thin enough to squeeze into a child-size tracksuit to save paying VAT. The tracksuit is now vintage and worth more than all his records. Itā€™s good to have a diversified pension plan.

I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by.

he cover of the Queen single One Vision. Itā€™s a group shot of the band reversed like a photo negative. Itā€™s the mid 80ā€™s so itā€™s not just Brian that has big hair. Brian is at the back, arms raised to the sides - the Star Fleet theme is such a corker, he internally beams - a pose that will latterly be made iconic when a young James Cameron pays homage to it in his film Titanic. Roger, looking not unlike the lion from the Wizard of Oz, is flexing his left arm showing off his bicep. Those Radio Gaga moves work wonders. Is John the inspiration for the V for Vendetta mask with its creepy thin smile? You probably wouldnā€™t have signed off on the photo but John doesnā€™t care what you think. Freddieā€™s at the front, fists clenched. He is channeling the Human Torch. 200 degrees is ok for fried chicken but make sure the internal temperature reaches 140.

No, Mr Lloyd Webber, I donā€™t think roller skates are for me.

The cover of the Dionne Warwick single Heartbreaker from 1982. A headshot of Dionne wearing a black sequinned dress or top, holding a black cat. Both stare down the lens, both look fabulous. The photo has been shot in a studio. Over Dionneā€™s shoulder is a mottled background that reeks of school photo day, or a paint effect from a 90s home makeover show. The cat is judging you. It knows you use too many mixed metaphors. Where are its treats, you nincompoop?

Am I yacht rock?

The cover of The Power of Love, the second solo album by The Damned guitarist Captain Sensible. The Captain is sitting in a posh hotel room or library. Thereā€™s no sign of his trademark beret and shades but at least he has his kit on. Heā€™s wearing a tuxedo with a winged collar and white bow tie. Did he go to Eton? Would explain his swift promotion from midshipman. He sits in a cream leather chair, a decanter and a framed picture in the background. Always decant your snakebite and black.

These conjunctivitis eye drops are putting me right on edge.

The back cover of the Barbra Streisand album guilty from 1980. Barbra is shown with Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees. Barbra and Barry are hugging - wearing white on a white background - staring wide-eyed down the camera lens, pupils huge, eyeballing the viewer. Barbra smoulders in a sleepy way. Barry has a clenched teeth grin.

It looks like youā€™re writing a pop song, would you like to put ā€˜loveā€™ in the title?

This is the front cover for the album Tears and Laughter by the artist Johnny Mathis. Johnny is handing a large green balloon with a smiley face to a young girl. The balloon dominates the photo. It looks like an uninvited guest - like 1980 Clippy has just appeared.
