The trend is not our friend. Odds are increasing of another storm developing in the western Caribbean on Tue-Wed then tracking northward into the Gulf on Thu-Fri. A track toward Florida is what the models have been showing, with a possible landfall on Sat-Sun. Stay tuned and stay prepared!!

Do wind farms kill birds? Yes but far less than other hazards. www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/wind-power...

I agree. Thermal storage can play a huge role in our decarbonized future, at the scale of a community, or for individual homes. The technology is simple, and it seems the cost should be relatively low.

Thermal energy storage doesn’t get enough attention. The world’s thermal storage facility currently being built in Finland will be able to store a whopping 90GWh - that’s 30x more than the largest electric storage facility in operation today. interestingengineering.com/energy/caver...

The Varanto project design comprises three caverns, each measuring over 900 feet (300 m) long, 131 feet (40 m) high, and 65 feet (20 m) wide.

Given the extreme weather we are seeing, it is worth noting that Project 2025 wants to do away with NOAA, and believes the main problem with climate change is that people are too alarmed about it. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-manda...

Still, it is remarkable to be so open about targeting agencies for producing research. Mandate for Leadership says that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration should be “broken up and downsized” because it is “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.”

The “climate change industry”? See, there are some industries that Republicans want to put out of business!

The risks of climate change or credible government response are not accepted in Mandate for Leadership. Indeed, the word “climate” cannot be uttered without an some language to emphasize that its all exaggerated, e.g., “climate extremism,” “radical climate policy,” “extreme climate policies,” or “climate policy fanaticism.” Climate is also presented as akin to DEI or Critical Race Theory “and other woke ideas”— artifacts of liberal brainwashing, where efforts to solve some underlying societal problem is a much greater danger than the problem itself.

Ocean warming from burning oil and gas fuels stronger hurricanes and rising seas. The longer we ignore the science, the more we lose. You can’t win against the laws of physics. #Helene2024

Great list! I probably missed it, but demand-side management - designing and coordinating end-use devices to reduce coincident demand peaks - can also play a huge role. We have a forthcoming paper that asks "How much could it help?" It depends, of course, but not hard to cut grid build 50% or more.

Electrification is efficiency. When we electrify our energy systems coupled with clean electricity, something remarkable occurs: significant inefficiencies disappear. In a decarbonized world, our energy demand will be much lower than it is today. www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/electrific...
