After the death of Tyre Nichols, Memphis enacted a policy prohibiting police from conducting pretextual traffic stops. The Republican state legislature and governor just enacted a preemptory law overturning the policy, and prohibiting any city in Tenn. from passing a similar one.
By enacting the legislation, the Republican governor sided with GOP lawmakers who forged ahead despite pleas from Nichols' parents to give them a chance to find compromise.
