"How Stuff Works" article on old-fashioned phones was published in 2000. In 2011, Hurricane Sandy hit NYC hard. In my Manhattan neighborhood, we had no electricity (and no street lights) for 5 days! My phone worked perfectly. Most of my neighbors had only cell phones that went down in a few hrs.
