Well I watched it in 89 / 90, before Fargo, before Northern Exposure, etc. You will likely see comparisons to many other things. But embrace the dreamlike ambience - when it all gets weird. Just let it take you.
We watched a pirated copy of Robocop, sneaked into school after hours & viewed via the VHS player stored in a too-well-lit Music Room. As terrible as the copy was, it was impactful, illicit, and disturbing. We were about 10/11 and it remains a core memory.
