After I posted a historical smoke chart for Calgary yesterday, @dustinmeyer.bsky.social asked if I could do the same for Edmonton. Here you go! Edmonton is up to 119 smoke hours so far this summer, which is already the 4th-most on record.

See the note in small print at bottom of the chart. Environment Canada’s definition of a “smoke hour” requires both smoke in the air *and* visibility to be reduced below 9.7 kms (6 statute miles).

Working on that now!

We're now up to 100 smoky hours in Calgary so far this summer. 😷

Temperatures of 35°C used to be a rarity in Jasper, Alberta, the mountain town that was just ravaged by wildfire. Only 25 days that hot have been recorded in the past 110 years. Of those, 12 have come since 2021, including 6 so far in 2024.

Reading about the fire in Jasper, my former home, while thick smoke rolls into Calgary, my current home. We visited Jasper last week. Our 2-year-old said tonight: “I don’t want the fire in Jasper. I want to go back to Jasper.” He was so sad. I thought I would be too. But it just feels … numb.
