A use case of ML systems adding lots of value: Stripe emails me when *after* processing their system detects potential fraud. This is my 2nd such email over. In both cases, I took a look and decided "nah, looks fine." In both cases, I was wrong: and got a fraudulent chargeback.
I think since they started getting more users they reduced computationally intensive operations like search, some algo feeds etc
And by the way this has been going on for a long long time. 15-20 years ago someone paid James Earl Jones to basically read a dictionary and to this day he doesn’t know who or why (probably Nuance or Apple)
