It is impossible to overstate how much Sea Otter Awareness week cheered up my Instagram feed. Following lots of aquariums was an excellent idea. 🦦
On the one hand, though I do want to read it, I am not really keen enough on Intermezzo to want it in hard cover. On the other hand, it is currently possible to get it at a discount at some national chains for close to what will likely be the cost of the paperback when it eventually comes out. Hmmm.
I just opened up a file of some PPT slides from my classes in early March 2020 and it felt like my whole world tilted a little. I don't know what's more disorienting: that I don't feel like the same person I was then or that I do feel like the same person I was then, both of which are true.
Quite enjoying The Bee Sting so far. 🐝
"I think we can’t persuade students to read what we want to teach them; we have to teach what students want to read." Really? To me this is really abandoning education as a project of discovery, not to mention challenge and growth. This is to abandon both them and our own values.
Where we’re at now, like it or not. 😑 A history major “runs his assigned readings through ChatGPT to generate summaries of the text, answer specific Q, & identify quotes. ‘I don’t have the time to literally read every single word that gets assigned,’he said.” www.insidehighered.com/news/student...
Students are turning to YouTube, podcasts and ChatGPT-crafted summaries rather than actually reading their assignments for class. Professors are unsure how to adapt.

Talking about Donne today in class and tempted just to play this clip and let them all go early. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXow...

I have no idea if the talk I'll be giving in the department will stand up to their scrutiny but I am happy to find that I am still genuinely interested in it myself and at the end of the day, that's the point of this whole enterprise. Curiosity-driven research ftw!
What did we even do before PowerPoint to put off the real work of preparing a talk we have to give while still feeling like we are working on it? 🙃
Ok, this is a bit of Sally Rooney discourse I have to weigh in on. When did 33 become middle aged? Or even “approaching” middle age? 🙄 😅
