This year two tornadoes landed on my rural road, one west of my house, and one just east of it, so close that I can see the tree that the tornado sheared half off of from my mailbox. Don't pretend that anywhere is safe from the world we've made and are still making.

Helene is just devastating to the people of NC. I just saw someone post, after people trying to get a hold of her: “I am alive, but my city is gone.” 8 words, I’m holding back tears, trying to explain to people over here. No, entire towns are gone. This place, its people, its heart: ripped out.
