Kill (Nagesh Bhat, 2023). Sets itself up as your standard the parents don't approve of a love match. Not where it goes. Bleak and quite brilliant.
Angel (O'Neill, 1984)- Shouldn't work. Pure exploitation but has incredible heart. Plays like a darker Legend of Billie Jean.
Dressed to kill (De Palma, 1980). Had the ending spoiled 30 years ago when my landlord said it was the film he hated must and why. He was wrong.
Body Double (De Palma, 1984)- Incredible Hitchcock riff that broils in sleeze. Man at the height of his powers!
Il Boss (Di Leo, 1973)- Cracking gangster pic. Hilariously promises a sequel that was never made. Recommended.
Italian season continues: Illustrious Corpses (Rosi, 1976) Had never heard of this but was looking at a Time Out list of best Italian films and stumbled on this. Capsule review mentioned Parallax View so was intrigued. Phenomenal, and phenomenally bleak portrait of Italy as a broken country.
Italian season starting with four from Dario Argento: Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), The Cat O'Nine Tails (1971) The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Deep Red (1975). All very effective Giallos. Deep Red is the standout though. Can't believe it's taken this long to get to it.
A voyeuristic nature of film triple; Special Effects (Cohen, 1983), Blow Out (1981), Peeping Tom (Powell, 1960). All fantastic- no notes.
Now all caught up. Next on the docket: Special Effects (Cohen, 1982). Thanks to the following podcasts for inspiring a lot of these viewings: Secret Handshake, Pure Cinema & Junkfood Cinema. Also to The Projection Booth for doing insightful audio documentaries on some of these.
