Marissa J. Lang writes a tender story about the friends who gathered here on July 19, 1974. What were they doing having breakfast and drinking champagne on the National Mall? How could it happen? Gift link.

This photo on the National Mall captivated the country decades ago. The real story behind it remained a mystery — until now.

In 1974, a group of friends met the unthinkable with a lavish celebration. The real story behind a photo that captured the moment remained a mystery until now.

I've seen it all over the region. We have to rethink a lot of our old patterns with climate change.

Been considering this as I live in WNC. 1. The roads were built near the rivers, easiest and most convenient. 2. When rural electrification came thru, they only ran power to the towns and hiways. People left their homes in the hollers and hills and moved to the roads. 3. River valleys flood.

One of those things I read several years ago and wish I'd bookmarked was a study detailing the both the stages of mortality associated with Hurricane Katrina and the astonishingly long tail associated with it.

There is no place without climate catastrophe because we are deeply interconnected. If we commit to not giving up on each other, we are also guaranteeing that nobody will give up on us. Our safety is in solidarity.

That reminded me, of the time I watched The Lathe of Heaven with friends on a b&w tv struggling to get the local PBS signal. It was a cheesy low budget production but the story was so good.

NC makes this worse by requiring a *witness* signature for mail in ballots. (Not on the actual ballot, but still...) I hate it and will vote early instead.

What's unfolding in Western NC and E Tennessee is a disaster of monumental proportions--please keep the people there in your thoughts and help as you can. BUT ALSO: Project 2025 wants to dismantle NOAA (weather tracking/warnings), FEMA, and effective governance in general. Remember that as you vote
