Happy #FossilFriday! Today I’m continuing to share cool mounts I saw while in South America, this time featuring Pelagornis! Pelagornis was the largest bird to ever fly, and those sharp protrusions you see in its mouth are not teeth, but are in fact bony extensions of the beak itself! 🧪⚒️

A photo of a skeletal mount of Pelagornis on display at the MACN in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The wingspan of the fossil bird spans the entire photo, and its large skull is filled with sharp pseudo-teeth.

🚩This is a great example of a significant error that could easily slip through clinician review. Catching it requires knowledge of data the tool has access to and/or cross-checking the vaccination record (which defeats the intended purpose of the AI draft). www.nytimes.com/2024/09/24/h...

Dr. Vinay Reddy, a family medicine doctor at U.N.C. Health, recalled an instance in which a patient messaged a colleague to check whether she needed a hepatitis B vaccine.

The A.I.-generated draft confidently assured the patient she had gotten her shots and provided dates for them. This was completely false, and occurred because the model didn’t have access to her vaccination records, he said.

Our sail-backed friend Edaphosaurus is more closely related to us than reptiles. One telltale trait: a single skull opening behind the eye called the temporal fenestra. It’s a mark of synapsids, of which mammals are part, and we have one, too, between our cheek bone and cranium.🧪
