Blocks of snow as big as cars: Yesterday, this huge avalanche fell in the SLF test site in the Vallée de la Sionne (Arbaz, VS), recorded by the automatic measuring equipment. It started as a dust avalanche and turned into a wet snow avalanche. More about the test site: www.slf.ch/en/about-the...

Snow measurement has never been so fast and accurate: ETH Zurich researchers have developed an artificial intelligence capable of determining snow depth across Switzerland using satellite images.

International Mountain Day: Since 1936, data on snow has been collected on the Weissfluhjoch. Today, the SLF also focuses on other topics that affect mountain regions, such as avalanches and other natural hazards, permafrost, mountain ecosystems and the influence of climatechange.

SLF technician Matthias Jaggi is spending three months at the French-Italian research station Dome C in Antarctica. There he wants to find out how snow metamorphism affects the redistribution of stable oxygen isotopes. First part of his logbook blog: slf.ch/en/news/anta...

More droughts in summer and autumn – combined, paradoxically, with an increased risk of flooding – and, in the long term, less snow in winter. Climate change is altering the Earth's water balance. 7th and last part of our series on COP28: slf.ch/en/news/clim... 📷 M. Brunner

Due to climate change, permafrost is warming up and ultimately thawing. This makes it an indicator for climate change. With the thawing ground alpine natural hazards through slope instabilities increase. Part 6 of our series on COP28: slf.ch/en/news/clim... 📷 R. Kenner

With increasing temperatures, more heatwaves and less snowfall, glacier melt is accelerating. Whether we will still have water reserves in the form of frozen ice by 2100 depends on efforts to contain the climate crisis. Part 5 of our series on COP28: www.slf.ch/en/news/clim... 📷 M. Huss

Climate change could jeopardise important forest services, such as wood as a raw material or protection against natural hazards. @wslresearch.bsky.socialwww.slf.ch/en/news/clim... 📷 M. Schaub

Es hat kräftig geschneit, vor allem im Osten. Das SLF Davos @slfdavos.bsky.social hat deshalb heute Morgen auch die Lawinengefahrstufe teilweise revidiert und auf Stufe 4 (gross) hochgesetzt.
