If Star Trek teleportation is death, then death is just an inconvenience. If I took your atoms apart, and then rebuilt you exactly a year later, would you have been dead for a year? Where does the house go when the Legos are in the bin? Is that death? It doesn't seem as permanent as death should be

A corporation with this technology could keep you functionally enslaved and immortal. "Yeah technically John prime died centuries ago, we just keep printing new ones because it's cheaper than training a new worker"

With this technology, you can: -Create a pattern for anything, living or nonliving -Print any pattern you have access to If somebody has access to your pattern, they can print as many copies of you as they'd like. I, personally, would take little comfort knowing they wouldn't be the same atoms.

It's like a house made of Legos. Swap out the bricks and it's still a Lego house. Take it apart/destroy that "pattern" and it's no longer a house, it's Legos. Put it back together, it's a Lego house again. Swap out a person's atoms for identical atoms, same person. Shuffle their pattern? Bad time.

IMO, the idea of "ownership" of your atoms is an evolutionary hurdle that needs to be overcome. Whatever fundamental particles this matter is being broken into/made from would have to be interchangeable. Therefore, I'd argue that the "pattern" of these things is what's important.

The crux of the "this kills you" argument is that you're not being reconstructed from the same atoms: they're different atoms, your consciousness ends and a perfect copy made from separate atoms starts existing elsewhere. This is regarded as death.

By this I mean: not teleportation. There's no teleporting of anything, matter is broken down in place A and reconstructed in place B. People like to argue that this kills you. I'd argue that this level of technology would render death meaningless and necessitate a fundamental shift of perspective

I have Very Strong Feelings™ about Star Trek style teleportation
