Knew a Wisconsin artist returning by car from sketching at an archeology dig in Mexico. A dog had peed on her daypack days before and despite washing it. A customs dog stopped at her bag. They checked everything down to the seams in her clothing.
It was actually knowing a brown-skinned Mexican woman from Tijuana with marginal English who always answered "No" which drove home to me how ridiculous those checks are. I'm working on the assumption they're just to get traffic to slow down enough for the drug dogs to get a whiff.
