So delighted to have this article out! Itā€™s a mash up of digital inclusion & digital disconnection research, and pushes forward the relationship between these fields via a study of low-income families w/ high-school children journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

With Meta saying they're not renewing the deals struck with Aust news companies that originally avoided them being 'designated' (ie targets) of the News Media Bargaining Code, the question now is whether the current govt will dust off the NMBC & actually use it or not! www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03...

Meta won't renew commercial deals with Australian news media

Fake AI-generated Indigenous art is flooding online platforms run by companies like Adobe, eBay and Etsy. Indigenous artists say the AI models, trained on their work, is threatening their livelihoods and their cultures

AI is producing ā€˜fakeā€™ Indigenous art trained on real artistsā€™ work without permission

One Indigenous artist said the process of using their art to train AI models that competes with them for work is a ā€˜very colonial mindsetā€™.

Enjoyed presenting 'When Personal Data Isnā€™t: Toward a Concept of Entangled Data', at Digital Intimacies 9 #DigInt9 today. Entangled Data might be the idea that weaves together ideas I've been playing with since my PhD, all the way to my recent work!

How We Became Posthuman (Hayles, 1999)

A reminder that the specificities of individuals/bodies cannot easily be reduced to just data.
Both material (physical) and digital systems depend on broader contexts to be meaningful.
Data tells stories, but has a life and existence of its own (a ā€˜materiality of informaticsā€™).
Data/information about people, about individuals, about bodies ARE NOT THE SAME as those people, individuals or bodies.
> Entangled Data

Data is more often than not entangled both at the point of creation (what itā€™s about) and within the system(s) it circulates within.
Data tells stories about people, but far more often these are entangled stories insomuch as theyā€™re about multiple people, and only contextually meaningful.
Data has a separate existence (or ā€˜lifeā€™, even) to the individual and context from which it came
Emerging Implicationsā€¦

At the intimate scale, data is obviously entangled, but seeing data as a (separable) story, not a reflection, matters.
Data entangles with other data to tell unexpected (including potentially obtrusive) stories.
Presuming all data is entangled, unless guaranteed not, amplifies the responsibility of data holders (from small to corp/platform levels).
Escapes the fetishisation of only individual control and responsibility as the ā€˜solutionā€™ to privacy and data issues.
