(in fairness, there's not /that/ much fatalism and some of it is about people who will do aftermarket crap anyway, but every time I see a "too bad the courts will block it" post I scream a little bit)
Also, regarding aftermarket crap, I assume the vaaaaast majority of vehicles don’t do aftermarket crap, and insurance companies will probably start taking notice of these potentially dangerous modifications and hopefully crack down on people making their vehicles more dangerous to pedestrians.
In this case didn't the supreme court recently block it by effectively deciding that regulatory agencies aren't real

I'm still gonna keep driving my tiny hatchback and getting 2x the fuel mileage of all the monsters around me. And I am /so/ glad to have a car that's small and easy to maneuver/stop, there would be several pedestrians, children and animals that might have been struck otherwise.
