Website update: The site is up, but all the feeds are down. Troubleshooting.....

#earthquake#seismograph (Mind you, its VERY windy in Victoria at the moment, very noisy heliograph).

Current global coverage of VDL #ACARStbgmap.airframes.io/ and filter by squawk code 15.

I was wondering what altitude the aircraft were at when plotted on the heat map, so I tweaked the #nodered#RTLSDR antenna is in the guys garage touching the wall for its full length. Less than perfect is better than nothing!

Just activated a new VDL station. KEGE. Lots of stuff going in and out of here due to it being a very popular ski resort and summer getaway location. Same setup to my other stations, Pi3, orange SDR, RTLSDR rabbit ears set to 19.5 inches per side. Will let the heat map run for a bit longer.

19.5 inches per side and you are ready to rock the VHF ACARS/VDL world from your location. @airframes is always looking for more feeders. (You can of course just add a VDL etc to your existing #ADSB setup. No need for the case, but you do need the VHF antenna.) DM open for station setup help. 7/EOL

The whole setup is a pretty small footprint. I hate Pi wifi with a passion, so always try and get an Ethernet cable drop, but of course you can go wifi if you really must. Here is the antenna set at 19.5 each end. Of course you don't need to use the RTLSDR diploe, you can use any straight wire. 6/

Antenna. Pop the little plastic cover off and mark which element is connected to the shield of the coax. Due to the static bleed resister, you can NOT use a meter to test which is which. You need to visually inspect it and put a bit of tape or paint on it. (Some rust from outdoor weather). 5/

In the end, I was looking for something a little geeky looking, but nothing too over the top. I think it hit the sweet spot. Looking to upload the STL file soon. Building the software should be smooth via the ACARS page: thebaldgeek.github.io/ *Robot father & son not included. 4/

I would not put it in an attic in Arizona, but indoors where people are living, the passive ventilation is just fine. We took many thermal images and with heatsinks on the SDRs and the usual chips on the Pi, everything works as you would expect with no throttling. 3/
