If you do pick it up, I will say a lot of the characters start as caricatures. It almost had me bounce off, but I would implore you to stick with it.
It's a masterful exercise in showing how perspective shapes how we see characters; by the end half the characters you've been rooting for are evil, and you start to wonder if you had the Gandalf and the Sauron the wrong way around.
Just finished the last book of the original First Law trilogy. I have some very minor gripes (spirit talking, the final book perhaps losing a little steam towards the end) but overall I can't reccomend it enough.
