There's a world of difference between being able to name every senator (I can't) and SCOTUS justice and knowing that the number of justices has been nine for a very long time. That's junior-high-school-level information.

One of my siblings, who went to an excellent college and really is not stupid, didn't know how many justices were on the Supreme Court.

Sounds like her parents don't feel the need to fill their empty nest. They may be looking forward to having more privacy. There are plenty of things she can ask about when she calls home. She's lived with these people for 18 years.

Some people will never have a backyard. It is, however, important to be able to care for the dog financially and emotionally.
