Shellmounds were large mounds of not just shells but other matter including many burials. They were very important to the culture and served as centers of ceremony and other uses. 2/
About 15 minutes by bike from my house is the site of an Ohlone village; this is actually an umbrella term for what was 57 different groups of people living in the greater area (here, the Tuibun.) Any structure is long gone, but here a few shellmounds are left. 1/
