FWIW, Ireland doesn't fine families and doing this is pretty common. We're taking them out early in the school year and none of them have exams for at least a couple of years. I think they'll catch up, but I was pretty conscientious about going to school, so do feel a pang of guilt for sure.
We are taking our kids out of school for two weeks in October to go away. My wife just graduated as a midwife, has two months off before starting work and it's been a long slog for 4 years. We're going somewhere very different and I have no idea, on balance, how that will pan out. Hopefully well.
