When this pattern isn't tended to, it can result in a situation where trans women get crapped on, then get subtly pushed into the background of that happening, and then into the background of the effort to uplift trans creators, worsening the problem of our underrepresentation.

But this is a pattern that many people have found surprising: while a great deal of mainstream transphobia especially targets trans women, trans women are underrepresented both as authors and creators and as well-represented fictional characters.

It is painfully obvious that the acceptable and marketable trans voices in SFF are the ones whose books and branding fall closest in line with what is expected of cis authors. Anyone who deviates is publicly kicked down a peg

It bothers me when people say they want to protect trans people but only mean “non-binary AFAB people who haven’t transitioned.” It bothers me when people use their support for these authors to justify their mistreatment of other trans people.

Both identities are valid and there’s complicated reasons why people fall into one or the other. But if you are visibly trans, you will have a target on your back. You will be treated much, much worse.

Putting this out there: there is a BIG difference in the SFF community between how visibly trans/non-binary people are treated and how trans/non-binary people who are perceived as cis men/women are treated

I haven't "been there" on the scale she has but to some extent I see my younger self in this so much (we're the same age but 2021 was a hell of a year lmao). Thinking that if you just explain yourself *a little more* this time it'll fix everything. Hatred of you turning into a gleeful spectacle

I've seen this exact thing happen to so, so many fucking people in the same way The only way to win is to never share opinions, or go total grey wall and not give a fuck what people say trying to cancel you while you wait for them to lose interest. You will never win by explaining yourself

Finally saw American Fiction last night and honestly this is probably the most accurate movie about publishing ever made
