RE:  RCMP Preservation of Evidence Robert Pickton Investigation

The Reconciliation Action Group recently learned of the RCMP application to the courts to dispose of 14,000 pieces of evidence collected during the investigation into former Port Coquitlam pig farmer Robert (Willie) Pickton. We strongly condemn this application and request that it is withdrawn immediately, and all evidence is preserved. 

There are at least 30 victims that have not been recovered that match the timeframe and location of this predator that deserve to be found. The families of these victims are owed every effort to locate their loved one and are entitled to a robust investigation to find them. Canada regularly permits Indigenous women to

Canada regularly permits Indigenous women to be disposed in landfills across the country and fails to properly investigate these murders. Disposing of a large quantity of evidence with a strong link to the missing victims is another violent attack on the families of the missing women and Indigenous communities. We refer to the Final Report on the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls MMIWG2S Calls for Justice, in particular the following two calls:

1.5 We call upon all governments to immediately take all necessary measures to prevent, investigate, punish, and compensate for violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

9.9 We call upon all levels of government and all police services for the establishment of a national task force, comprised of an independent, highly qualified, and specialized team of investigators, to review and, if required, to reinvestigate each case of all unresolved

The Reconciliation Action Group stands with the families of these victims and other organizations calling for the preservation and continued investigation into this evidence and any other related evidence.
