This is the Roman amphitheatre which, as was usual, is situated outside of the city walls.

The interesting thing about this shrine is that it is across the river from the Roman city. Images of the Roman city in the Grosvenor Museum suggest the far bank would have been heavily wooded.

(? – c. 62-79CE) Probably born to a lower-class family, possibly in Rome and moving to Pompeii after the 63CE earthquake, she became a wealthy businesswoman. It is not known if she had a husband, through whom she would be allowed to hold property, or some other patron or legal guardian which she would have, due to the laws of the time, needed to hold property. She is instead known through her property in Pompeii, a compound of apartments, shops, gardens and baths – her baths contained a natatio (swimming pool) making it particularly attractive to wealthier male clientele, and her female baths were marketed as ‘The Venus bath, fitted for the well-to-do’ – near the Amphitheatre, and through inscriptions and frescos found in the property depicting mythology and everyday life in Pompeii.

Truly awesome, not just the Treasury but all the buildings. I stood in the middle of the amphitheatre & asked my sons sitting on the stone steps of seating whether they could hear what I said. Good accoustics.
