ya the distortion in the rushmore shot is caused by use of a wide angle lens. it doesn't really have anything to do with the aspect-ratio per se (though many ultra-widescreen movies are shot using anamorphic lenses which does impact lens selection)

I did watch the special editions discs. At the time they were reference quality especially with my Progressive Scan DVD player. The theatrical discs are great to have, but given their non-anamorphic nature look so bad on anything that isn’t my 27 in CRT I keep for retro gaming.
