But crucially, a person can only get asylum if they are being persecuted "on account of" one of the five protected grounds. So, even if you are being threatened with death, if the person saying that just don't like you because you slept with his wife? That doesn't count, it's "personal animus."
You see this sort of thing with racism too where white people are unable to compose individual acts of hostility into an inferred general animus against people of color. Defenders of rapists and abusers do this too, though they're at least cynical about it

just an observation, but ive noticed that there’s a certain kind of conservative straight woman whose politics seem to be motivated primarily by an animus towards gay and effeminate men, and i think thats worth further examination
Really disgusted at the person throwing around the phrase "bomb-throwers" the last day. Deep-seated animus in some quarters is very apparent.
