Swallow-tailed Cotinga in the Serra do Mar outside Rio de Janeiro last month - a #bird I hadn't expected to see as bad weather forced me to cancel a planned day of higher altitude birding, so a wonderful surprise when this one turned outside the lodge as I waited out rainstorms. 🪶 #BirdsOfBrazil

A Swallow-tailed Cotinga is seen from behind as it perches on the slender branch of a tree covered in tiny green berries and long, narrow green leaves, its head turned to look back over its right shoulder towards the camera, with blurred green vegetation in the distant background. It is a stunningly beautiful bird about 22cm long with a long, forked dark bluish-black tail, bluish-black wings, a patterned bluish-black and acid-yellow back which looks like a finely woven piece of tapestry, an egg-yolk yellow throat, pale pink bill, dark beady eyes, a black face with a thin white collar, and a greyish-brown crown.
