I think Willa Cather has been done a disservice by presenting her as a sort of cloy novelist of early prairie life. “My Antonia” shows a community of escaped murderers, religious weirdos, sadists, all in a foreign land they don’t really understand. Nebraska is, all day long, Nebraska.
Totally agree! Hometown is such a perfect gateway drama too that’s a great point. You’re also right though that you can’t beat the stakes in CLOY to add to the feels and the yearning… 🤔
