Tbf, I definitely had some nuns in school tell us Jesus was watching us from the cross on the wall so this is just a rebrand of Catholicism

Given Tolkien's Catholicism and his penchant for slipping theological themes into his work (far subtler and more tastefully than Lewis did, of course), I think it's fair to take it more or less at face value. Men know they are Fallen, whereas Elves, who can nonetheless sin, have no Original Sin.

(she went to the same uni as me and ended up running into some ppl who got her to convert from catholicism to a socially conservative schismatic anglican church here lol)

I'm not a Catholic but I know enough lapsed ones to confirm it's absolutely a real thing. Catholicism in the US and Canada is sufficiently different and sufficiently monolithic to have a really strong cultural impact—you could talk with my friends here in LA and your experiences would be v. similar.

whenever i try to explain cultural catholicism to my bf i feel like he’s always like “that’s not a real thing” but i feel like other catholics here might understand that it’s at least partially a real thing.

I had never thought much about it either, but it's true, up to and including lots of Catholicism references

another issue is i really deeply need to be able to assign a bishop/priest whatever of my choosing but catholicism won't LET ME. i think in the past the game naturally gave me conversion opportunities but i'm too close to the stupid papacy
