This is good news. Don't know how optimistic I am about any changes to the outcome. As someone who watched a chunk of the original case as it was happening, I couldn't believe how stoic the sons were at the trial. But then you hear what life was like for them at home and it makes complete sense.

The closer you are to your opponent, the less parry frames they get; the closer your opponent is to you, the less parry frames you get. Good fencing requires you to always be aware exactly how close you are to your opponent, because it functionally changes the speed of both your attacks.
This is how it works IRL – dodging backwards changes the distance between you, which means your opponent's sword needs to travel further to hit you, which gives you crucial extra fractions of a second to parry
