Inventing too early for a marketplace is not unique to biotech. I am preparing a lecture for a ChemEng class on the early history of invention of the lithium ion battery and the use of forward and backward patent citations in analyzing the marketplace. Time gaps existed here too.

Answering the second one first: I'm always curious about why people make the decisions they make (hence my question). Now, the first: I wanted to do on-the-ground work, then I wanted to be a manager, and then I wanted to design policy. And that's why I moved from ChemEng to PoliSci/Geography.

Yup, last week I taught a class in ChemEng and reviewed a study I did several years ago on alumni inventors over the past 100 years. The commercialization of chem and chemE inventions created this problem. The students today will have to fix it with inventions directed at sustainability.

This discussion is very disheartening. I got my BioChem degree in 1973, my ChemEng degree in 1979 and law degree in 1991. I have been a patent attorney for over 30 years. This discussion sounds a lot like the crap I faced when entering engineering and the sciences over 50 years ago!!!
