The neat part about being a patent lawyer is that people pay me to learn just enough about stuff than I can pretend I know what it is and how it works. I have a degree in Physics, I didn't know from column chromatography to purify [$UnspecifiedIntermediary.] But I learn REAL fast.

Ah yeah, column chromatography is a fairly common purification method. I've mostly worked with the more QC side of that, which uses instrumentation such as GC or HPLC to determine the purity of a sample solution, but they are rooted in the same concepts.
