I'm going to vote for Harris, obviously. I don't care about 3rd parties, but when I was younger I did. And if I wanted both: (1) Harris to win (2) the Libertarians to get 5% to get elex funds I could take reasonable guesses about which might vote might likely have more of an effect.

Yep, scholarship suggests this is a TV news effect that began in the ~70s and 80s. In particular, white flight meant that suburbanites were only really experiencing crime through TV news programming. The TV theory here also explains why we see such stark partisan shifts around POTUS elex
