October is the busiest month, but early starts and late finishes have their own rewards. Today a bridge informed me that it’s Fire Safety Week #FSW24 - a timely reminder in a time of fireworks and bonfires.

View of the Liffey from Talbot Bridge: the lights from buildings at either side, and even a tall crane whose reflection stretches to the bottom of the picture frame, do not meet in the middle, and the dark power of this broad, deep tidal river can be judged by the ripples of current in the middle. Central and in the top-third of the frame, the Sam Beckett Bridge, still lit in the grey dawn light, shines red along the stands of its harp-shaped back, creating a canvas with the numbers 2024 picked out from the colour.
