My favorite bit of the constant failures and explosions (literal and figurative) of various of Musk's endeavors is the fanboys rationalizing everything as some 30 dimensional chess move and we'll see when the GAME COMES TO FRUITION or whatever.

An older bear just killed another adult bear live on the Explore cams. I am more disturbed by the human response than by what happened with the bears. While I just need to sit with it, others dive immediately into (figurative) post-mortem analysis. Freeze (me) vs fight (others) response, I guess. 😞

It’s how I feel about newspeak in 1984. Languages exist on a continuum between binding and looseness (being tied to meaning versus being figurative and changeable). A language can’t exist at both extremes at the same time—binding your sense of reality while changing constantly!

Since the early 1980s, Marlene Dumas has created figurative paintings and ink-wash drawings that raise provocative questions about gender, beauty, sexuality, race, and the resultant conditions of oppression and violence. The artist takes her images from the mass media, particularly newspapers and television, and she manipulates them to achieve her desired effect. Characterized by spontaneous brushwork and a subjective use of color, her works merge art-historical and popular-culture references with private, autobiographical allusions. As a white woman who was raised under Apartheid rule in South Africa, some of her strongest works tackle the complicated themes of racial politics. This representation of a black African albino exposes race as a social construct that fails to correspond to identity. By choosing a subject whose very existence complicates the notion of racial categorization, and by rendering his skin tone and hair color in a sickly green hue, Dumas insisted on destabilizing the division between black and white. This work ultimately questions the ability of both skin color and paint to carry meaning.

Guston was a renowned painter of abstract art when he turned to figurative painting in the mid-1960s. "There is something ridiculous and miserly in the myth we inherit from abstract art,” he said. “That painting is autonomous, pure and for itself, therefore we habitually analyze its ingredients and define its limits. But painting is ‘impure.’ It is the adjustment of ‘impurities’ which forces its continuity. We are image-makers and image-ridden.” This statement and sentiment became a professional motto. Using a lexicon of light bulbs, shoes, cigarettes, clocks, and other consumer goods, Guston’s work becomes a contemporary poem ridden with images.
