:( #franklinexpedition#nordwestpassage#jamesfitzjames#kannibalismus

A very happy birthday to Alexander McDonald, born in Laurencekirk #OTD#HMSTerror#FranklinExpedition@scottpolar.bsky.social holds some of his letters: each one sealed with a blood red skull.

Image is of an oil painting of an impossibly beautiful young man. He looks early 20s, perhaps. His hair is red-gold and frames his face. And what a face. His eyes are mid-brown. His cheeks are slightly flushed.

The portrait is of Alexander McDonald, a surgeon who learned his trade on whaling ships before joining the Franklin Expedition in 1845 and honestly. #SurgicalTwink

Item number ZBA4548, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London. Presented by Mrs A N Dew, 2007.
Image shows a roughly circular blob of bright red sealing wax. In the centre of the wax is the impression of a human skull.

#OTD#FranklinExpedition. Penny wanted to beat Team Navy - led by Horatio Austin - and get his side of the story over to the Admiralty first.

William Penny by Stephen Pearce. Oil on canvas, 1853, 50 1/8 in. x 39 3/8 in. (1273 mm x 1000 mm). Bequeathed by John Barrow, 1899. Primary Collection, NPG 1209. © National Portrait Gallery, London

Sir Horatio Thomas Austin by Stephen Pearce. Oil on canvas, 1860, 15 3/8 in. x 12 3/4 in. (390 mm x 324 mm). Bequeathed by John Barrow, 1899. Primary Collection NPG 1218, © National Portrait Gallery, London.

Austin was Commodore of the Royal Navy's 1850-51 search for the Franklin Expedition: HMS Resolute (Austin), HMS Assistance (Captain Erasmus Ommanney), and two steam tenders, HMS Pioneer (Lt Sherard Osborn) and HMS Intrepid (Lt John Bertie Cator).

Team Navy's brass were not fond of Team Whaler, which was Captain Penny. Drama would ensue.

On August 18, the weather had calmed & Beattie's team continued their work. They cleared off the coffin & removed the lid. The inside was filled with a block of ice. Using heated water, they slowly thawed the ice, the body inside gradually coming into view… #FranklinExpedition#JohnTorrington

A short, narrow coffin sitting in a hole. The coffin is covered in dark blue fabric with white lines along the sides and crossing through the middle. A plaque is attached near the head of the coffin and a blue and white arrow lays at the foot.
A rusted metal plaque. It's blue-green and has white writing. The writing says, "JOHN TORRINGTON DIED JANUARY 1ST 1846 AGED 20 YEARS."
