His apology, intended to address the harm caused by importing rice from Arkansas into Haiti, was hollow and insincere. It may have appeared as he owned up but it's all in what they say, how they say it and don't say. He literally cast himself as a savior just trying to relieve them of the "burden" of growing their own food but it didn't work. By framing the situation as one where the U.S. is helping the "poor" Haitians, he reinforces a dangerous narrative that justifies neocolonial practices and the exploitation of resources. Moreover, he offered no solution to address the root causes of the problem, such as unfair trade practices and resource exploitation. Ultimately, it lacked true remorse, accountability, and the willingness to challenge the power dynamics that maintain the cycle of suffering. This is a classic example of saying sorry without actually meaning it, perpetuating a harmful system through empty words and insincere actions. Remember this, this is a modern form of colonialism veiled in the language of free markets and globalization. While Haiti might be the example, this system of exploitation extends to many resource-rich countries across the globe.
