everyone is like "switch to firefox it's better than chrome/chromium browsers because such and such!" and then mozilla shoves genAI chatbots into firefox with the disable method being either some convoluted shit or disabling updates, and is overly hostile to extension developers

In hindsight I think it's worth clarifying that this isn't running through any kind of genAI crap like ChatGPT or whatever, the devs have said the whole setup—even the voices—is all synthesized locally. I wouldn't have been using this feature, or the program at all, if it was incorporating AI slop.

It's a similar story with genAI and water, people just want it to be black-and-white, with big tech=evil. No, the water use is not big. Yes, the energy use is significantly larger than it would've been otherwise (and that's where it makes sense to focus!). And yes, it can be useful for some people.
