A political system which depends on the honour, truthfulness & fair play of its politicians has no way of dealing with politicians who are blatantly self-serving, greedy & corrupt, & precious few checks & balances to control wrongdoing & mendacity. Our media is partisan or is bemused & unequipped.

Specific people did specific things of their own free will in Nazi Germany. It wasn't some nebulous spirit; it was greedy Nazis stealing from the Jews and mudering them. In the US it's also greedy people fomenting hatred and division to increase profits and exploit us.
